Camp Staff
Director: Vicki Numkena
Hi! My name is Vicki Numkena. I was born and raised in a rural town in Michigan. I graduated from Alma College, a small college in Michigan with a BA in elementary education and physical education. I moved to AZ to get my MA in special education/learning disabilities. I had intended to become an Adaptive PE teacher, but my advisor talked me out of it! Later, I went back to school to become a Teacher of Student with Visual Impairments. I taught for 42 years. I lived in cities and rural areas of Arizona, including the Navajo Nation for 15 years. I have been a runner, hiker, backpacker and adventure seeker. Now I enjoy walking my dog and kayaking. I knew that when I retired, I wanted to start a Camp Abilities in northern Arizona so that kids who live in rural areas of the four corners region could have their own camp in their “backyard”. Thanks to many, my dream has come true!

I hold certifications from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) as a Construction Health & Safety Technician (CHST) & Safety Trained Supervisor (STSC) and am First Aid / CPR Qualified. Thank you very much for the opportunity to be the Safety Coordinator for Camp Abilities Four Corners this year! I have had a lot of fun with this team and am very confident in the capabilities of the coaches to ensure the safety of all the kids. I really admire the diligence everyone has to ensure safety and teamwork with every activity. The knowledge of the coaches in the various activities is shared with all the athletes through one instructor guiding the activity they know best. This ensures the athletes are able to compete safely through knowledge of the hazards in the activity, while continuously encouraging positive sportsmanship. All the coaches work with the athletes they coach before each activity to review the safety precautions and everyone groups together to stretch and prepare for the fun!! Because you have a registered nurse at each camp to give immediate care for any incident is another great safety aspect as well! I would absolutely love to be here every year for camp and the expanding group of kids this camp is ready to support!!

Staff: Dr. Zoilo M. Luces
My name is Dr. Zoilo M. Luces, and at Camp Abilities Four Corners, the athletes know me as “Coach Z.” I am a certified Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments and a certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist. I have had the opportunity to support different camps in New York, Maryland, Texas, Delaware, and Tucson, but Camp Abilities Four Corners has a very special place in my heart. Since 2021, I have continued to return because I strongly believe in Coach Vicki’s vision of creating a safe, supportive, and empowering camp experience for children with visual impairment. I understand that parents may feel nervous about sending their child to camp, especially when trying new sports and activities. At Camp Abilities Four Corners, we make sure that every athlete is included in every sport we offer by adapting activities, providing clear instruction, using appropriate equipment, and giving each camper the guidance and encouragement they need to participate with confidence. Our coaches and staff include Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments, Orientation and Mobility Specialists, Physical Education teachers, Physical Therapists, and other trained professionals who understand how to support children safely and meaningfully.
My goal as Coach Z is to help every athlete feel welcomed, protected, and capable. Camp is not only about sports; it is about building independence, courage, friendship, self-confidence, and joy. Parents can feel assured that their child will be surrounded by caring professionals who believe in their abilities and celebrate every step of their growth.
